Modern Air Transport - MAT - Incorporated in 1946 as a non-scheduled carrier,  MAT operated several C-46s for many years. In the summer 1962, the company equipped with five 049s bought from Capital Airlines. Three of these were used for spares, but the other two entered service with Modern, and a 1049 leased in addition. Modern was granted an interim certificate issued by the CAB to operate interstate-charters, domestic military contract flights, and overseas from 1 April 1963. A further 1049 was eventually leased and a 749A was bought in 1964. All the Connies were withdrawn during the following year with the introduction of a fleet of DC-7Cs in April - May 1965 following the airline's sale to Gulf American Land. Modern Air as it was called later went on to operate a fleet of CV-990A's until operations were suspended in September 1975.
